When I began the Heart Health and Performance Program at Mayo Clinic I had high hopes for my patients. We were prescribing the right medications to lower their blood pressure and cholesterol numbers.
But there was one problem. I wasn't addressing the cause of their health issues. It was around this time that I recognized I too was gaining weight in all the places I didn’t want to gain weight and my cholesterol numbers weren’t where I wanted them to be.
I realized the key to living a long, healthy life is not more medications, procedures and "weight loss" programs, but to focus on the factors that are most important in achieving a long, healthy life.
